Community Grown: Vibrant Community Owned Public Spaces

Graduate students Janany Nagulan and Aislin Livingstone worked with FoodShare Toronto during the summer of 2016 to better understand the organization’s process to scale from community gardens up to market gardens in the Gordonridge and Flemingdon Park neighborhoods. Through their work, they addressed the question: how do urban agriculture projects expand and strengthen their partnerships and networks to scale up sustainable food systems? And what are the tensions, compromises, and opportunities inherent in these processes?

Their case study provides valuable insights on the processes of scaling up urban food projects, the constraints and challenges faced within these processes, and the importance of meaningful and collaborative partnerships, knowledge sharing, and a strong guiding vision.
