The Southern Ontario node was based out of Wilfrid Laurier University and was initially led by Erin Nelson during her time as a postdoctoral fellow. The Southern Ontario node was then led by Theresa Schumilas after Erin began leading the Agroecology Working Group from the University of Guelph. Both Erin and Theresa worked in collaboration with Alison Blay-Palmer.

Research interests in the Southern Ontario Node included:

  • The potential of food hubs to support public procurement initiatives
  • Assessing effective models of multi-stakeholder partnerships
  • Evaluating the collective impact of food hubs within the local food systems
  • Working effectively and equitably with community food initiatives through community based and participatory action research methodologies
  • Imagining sustainable food systems resilience in the face of climate change
  • The intersection of open data, farmer livelihoods, and the digital farm gate
